Fred Nelson

The 2010 Award of Excellence was presented to Fred Nelson. Nominated by his peers, Fred was recognized for his years of service as a Social Worker in hospice palliative care. Since 1978, Fred has worked tirelessly for both the St. Boniface General Hospital and since 2003 with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority as Social Work Program Coordinator and now as Psychosocial Program Specialist.

Fred’s colleagues spoke of him as an innovator and developer with a strong commitment to his patients and their families.

His accomplishments are many, among them are:

  • Mr. Nelson worked collaboratively with other social workers to develop a very successful Grief Support Program for Children & Teens
  • He reviewed the resources and service models for psychosocial care of palliative care programs across Canada to develop a comprehensive and exemplary model for the Winnipeg region.
  • As a Steering Committee member and one of the founders of the Social Work Competencies on Palliative Education (SCOPE), Fred is instrumental in carving out and advancing the role of social work in hospice palliative care.
  • As a member of Canadian Partnership Against Cancer – Palliative and End-of-Life Care Advisory Group, Fred helps shape the integration of best practices, quality indicators and education for palliative care and cancer across Canada.

Fred’s commitment and faithful affiliation and work with the provincial and national hospice palliative care associations over the years are testaments to his belief in advancing the voice of hospice palliative care for all.
