Paul Henteleff

The 2013 Award of Excellence was presented to Dr. Paul Henteleff, leader, visionary and innovator in the palliative care field.

Since Dr. Henteleff’s graduation from medicine in 1956, he has undertaken many roles in medicine, including hospice palliative care. This led Dr. Henteleff to eventually earn the position of medical director at St. Boniface Hospital. In his career he was known for undertaking the role of advocate for patients and their families. During his years working as the leader of the St. Boniface Hospital`s Palliative Care Team, Dr. Henteleff worked tirelessly to advance hospice palliative care in Canada. With his and his team’s advocacy efforts they have seen the inception of palliative care as a core service in Manitoba. Upon retirement, Dr. Henteleff continued to work toward the future of palliative care in Canada by becoming the founding president of the Canadian Palliative Care Association. He continues to volunteer and continuously promote the cause of quality end-of-life care.

Dr. Paul Henteleff’s list of accomplishments includes:

• Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba Board and Committee member for the last 23 years.

• Served as President or Co-President on various palliative care associations from 1991 to 1996.

• Received the Volunteer Certificate of Merit in 1995

• Awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal in 2004

• Canadian Medial Association’s Honorary Membership for 1999.

Dr. Paul Henteleff’s hard work has affectionately earned him the moniker of senior statesman of Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba. It is with this hard work in advocating and his commitment for palliative care that has earned him the 2013 Award of Excellence.
